Popular Taiwan-based dumpling chain to open first Bay Area location

Popular dumpling chain, Bafang Dumpling, opened its first restaurant in Taiwan back in 1998. It has since opened more than 1,100 locations in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

The chain is finally making its way to the Bay Area. Bafang Dumpling is planning to open at the Santa Clara Square shopping center on Augustine Drive.

The restaurant plans to open this fall, according to Irvine Company Retail Properties, which owns Santa Clara Square. Bafang Dumpling did not reveal any additional details about the opening in response to KRON4’s inquiry late last week.

Bafang Dumpling submitted a tenant improvement application for the building space back on Dec. 12, 2024, according to the Santa Clara City Manager’s Office. The status of that application is currently under review.

Bafang Dumpling confirmed the Santa Clara opening via a Facebook comment on one of its reels posted about two months ago. They said it would open at the “end of summer.”

In addition to dumplings, the restaurant’s menu includes potstickers, Taiwanese noodle soup and bubble tea. The menu also has vegan options.

Bafang Dumpling broke onto U.S. soil in 2022 by opening its first restaurant in Industry (Southern California). The chain has since opened an additional 10 Southern California locations, with Van Nuys being the most recent to open. Its Instagram page has amassed more than 16,000 followers.

In nearby San Jose, a popular Asian grocery chain from Canada is opening its first Bay Area location. T&T Supermarket is taking over the former space of Walmart on 1600 Saratoga Ave. in West San Jose. No opening date for the supermarket has been set.
